About the Presentation
Video games are a primary means by which staggering numbers of people interact with computers. Game mechanics have been successfully integrated into compelling real-world applications like Foursquare, Google Image Labeler, and Fold.it. So why do we still view game design as a practice that's separate from user experience design? We should drop that artificial distinction, and game design should become a permanent part of our UX toolkit. We should furthermore expand our skillset to adopt the core competencies needed to build high-quality game experiences. This fun and interactive presentation will encourage UX professionals to consider game-based solutions to common design problems, and outline ten guidelines to help them maximize the success of game-based projects.
About John Ferrara
John Ferrara is the author of the upcoming book, "Playful Design: Creating Game Experiences in Everyday Interfaces", published by Rosenfeld Media. He's worked in information architecture since 1999, designing interfaces for websites, desktop applications, and video games. He's been at Vanguard since 2006, and before that did significant work for Unisys and General Electric. You can follow his blog at http://rosenfeldmedia.com/books/game-design/.
